PacketMole vs building it yourself
Ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini how to use your home IP while traveling without a subscription, and a common answer is to build it: a travel router, a second router at home, joined with WireGuard or a Tailscale exit node. That is a real answer.
That is exactly what PacketMole is. We built that system, we test it, and you pay once for the convenience of not building and maintaining it yourself. Here is an honest comparison.
What PacketMole is
Two preconfigured GL.iNet routers. The Home unit plugs into your home router. The Away unit travels with you: your devices join its Wi-Fi, their traffic leaves through your home connection, and websites see your home IP. It runs on your own Tailscale account, so there is no account with us. $349 one time. No subscription. Free US shipping.
Getting it to work once is not the hard part
With real networking experience, you can get a basic version working. Keeping it safe and reliable is the much larger job: making sure that when the connection home hiccups, your traffic stops instead of slipping out through the hotel network (so websites see the hotel's IP instead of your home IP), that it doesn't drop traffic it shouldn't, and re-testing that behavior every time anything changes, from a new network to a software update.
That checking never ends, and it is most of what you are paying for:
- If the link home drops, it stops instead of leaking. This is called failing closed. If the connection to your Home unit drops, the Away unit blocks traffic instead of quietly sending it out the hotel or cafe network. That means your internet pauses until the connection comes back; it does not silently switch to the local network. Tested on real hardware.
- Leak testing covers many situations, not just one.Tested on real routers across the failure situations that matter on the road; no test traffic leaked. Like any test, these cover the situations tested, not every possible condition.
- Every build is tested before it ships. Each pair is tested end to end before it ships.
- Every software update is tested before you get it.Every update is tested on real routers and runs on our own units before it reaches yours.
- Updates install themselves. They are signed and install automatically overnight. If the unit's health checks fail afterward, it tries to roll back on its own. You can turn automatic updates off.
What building it yourself honestly involves
- Choosing two routers that can do this and work together.
- Setting up a VPN or exit node at home, and keeping it running.
- If you use plain WireGuard, dealing with home internet that won't accept incoming connections (CGNAT, common on T-Mobile Home Internet, Starlink and many 5G home plans), or opening a port on your home router.
- Handling hotel and cafe Wi-Fi sign-in pages.
- Making sure nothing leaks when the tunnel drops, when you switch networks, or after an update, and re-checking all of it every time the router's built-in software or the VPN software updates.
- No one to contact when it stops working while you're abroad.
It can be done, and it never stops needing attention.
Who should build it themselves
If you are genuinely technical, enjoy networking, and are willing to own the configuring, the failure testing, and the re-checking every time something updates, building it yourself is a legitimate choice. You will understand every piece and can tailor it to your situation.
If you'd rather not own the testing and upkeep, PacketMole is the way to go: we do that part for you.
Side by side
| PacketMole | Building it yourself | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Arrives as two preconfigured units, each pair tested end to end before it ships; you sign in with your own Tailscale account | You choose the hardware, configure both ends, and verify it yourself |
| Home internet behind CGNAT | Works without an open port at home | Plain WireGuard needs an open port at home, which CGNAT prevents |
| If the connection home drops | Away unit blocks traffic until it reconnects (tested on real hardware) | Depends on how you set it up, and on you testing it |
| Leak testing | Tested on real routers across the failure situations that matter on the road; no test traffic leaked | Yours to design, run, and repeat |
| Testing before changes reach you | Every update is tested on real routers and runs on our own units before it reaches yours | You re-check after each firmware or VPN software update |
| Hotel and cafe sign-in pages | Guided sign-in on the Away unit's setup page (during sign-in, traffic briefly uses the venue's connection) | Yours to work out |
| Updates | Signed, automatic overnight, tries to roll back if health checks fail; can be turned off | Yours to manage and re-verify |
| Support | Email support | You troubleshoot it yourself, including while abroad |
| Cost | $349 one time, no subscription, free US shipping | Your hardware, plus your time for as long as you use it |
Questions people ask
- Do I need an account with PacketMole?
- No. PacketMole uses your own Tailscale account (Tailscale's Personal plan is currently free). There is no account with us and no subscription.
- My home internet is T-Mobile Home Internet or Starlink. Will it work?
- Usually, yes. PacketMole works behind CGNAT, which T-Mobile Home Internet, Starlink and many 5G home plans use, because it does not need an open port at home. It still depends on both internet connections and the local network allowing Tailscale traffic.
- What happens if the connection to home drops at a hotel?
- The Away unit blocks traffic instead of sending it out the hotel network, so your internet pauses rather than leaking. It reconnects on its own when the connection to your Home unit comes back.
- Can I turn automatic updates off?
- Yes. Updates are signed and install automatically overnight; if the unit's health checks fail afterward, it tries to roll back automatically. You can switch automatic updates off.
- How do I get help?
- Support is by email.
Pay once for the part you'd rather not maintain
You can build this. We did, and then kept going: the fail-closed behavior, the leak testing, the test on every build before it ships, the release tests before every update. PacketMole is that work, finished and maintained.
$349 one time. No subscription. Free US shipping (ships within the US only). 30 days; $50 restocking fee if opened or used.
